Short answer
A photo session goes best with a plan: pick outfits a week out, steam them the day before, eat a real meal first and arrive 10 minutes early. These checklists cover young families, seniors, headshots and couples. Tick items off, and your progress saves on your own device.
Start a week ahead
A week out is the right time to choose outfits, confirm the location and check the weather. Pick outfits early so you can wash, steam and fix anything. Confirm the time and the meeting spot with everyone who is coming.
Check for permits and park hours. If your spot needs a permit, sort that out first. Plan a backup date in case of rain or heat. Weather reschedules are always free.
The day before
Lay out every outfit, with shoes and accessories. Charge phones. Pack food, drinks and a small repair kit. Steam the clothes. Do not try new hair or skin products. Go to bed on time.
For kids, plan the naps and meals around the session. A fed, rested child is easy to photograph.
The day of
Get there a little early so no one is rushing. Put your phones away so you can be present. If you are running late, call or message ahead.
You do not need to know how to pose. A photographer will direct you during the session. A few deep breaths and a smile are all you need.
Hair, makeup and nails
That gives it time to settle.
For makeup, a little more than usual helps. Cameras flatten color. Choose a matte base, define the brows and use a lip or cheek color you already wear. For nails, a clean, simple manicure works best. Neutral or soft colors look good in close-up hand shots, such as with rings or kids. Chipped polish shows.
These are general tips. Follow your own style.
Prep for kids and teens
Kids do best when the plan is simple. Tell them what is going to happen and that it will be quick. Promise a small treat after, and keep the promise. Do not bribe in the middle of the session, which teaches them to stall.
Teens often want to look their best and feel awkward. Let them choose between two outfits you both like, and let them do their own hair. They will relax faster if they feel in charge. A friend or a sibling in a few shots helps too.
Babies and toddlers run on their own clock. Plan the session after a nap and a feed. If a child melts down, take a short break and try again. One rough moment does not have to ruin the session.
What to bring
Bring each outfit on a hanger, with shoes. Bring water, snacks for kids and a small first-aid kit. Add a lint roller, tissues and a hairbrush. Bring props that matter to you, like a sports ball, a guitar, a favorite blanket or a pet leash. Check first about large props.
Using the checklists
Pick the group that fits you with the tabs above. Tick items off as you go. Your progress stays on your device, so you can come back tomorrow and pick up where you left off. Use Print to keep a paper copy on the fridge, or Clear to start over for the next session.
The lists are general advice, not a rule. Skip anything that does not fit your plans. If you are unsure about a detail, such as an outfit, a location or the weather, ask before the day. A short question beats a worry on the day.
Questions about preparing
How early should I arrive to a photo session?
About 10 minutes early. That gives time to park, walk to the spot and settle before we start.
Should I get a haircut before photos?
Yes, one to two weeks before. A fresh cut right before the session can look too sharp. A little time lets it settle.
What do I do about my child melting down?
Take a break. Snacks, water and a few minutes of play usually help. Plan for it so it does not use up the whole session.
Are my checklist boxes saved?
Yes. They are saved on your device in your browser. Clearing your site data removes them. Nothing is sent anywhere.
