Spring: azaleas and the garden rules
Spring is the easy season in Raleigh. The WRAL Azalea Gardens are a 1.5-acre public garden with more than 60 azalea varieties and a fountain used for photos. The garden says azaleas bloom in spring and again in fall. Daytime photos there need no booking, per its own FAQ, and it asks you to be considerate of other visitors. Weddings and events are handled separately.
In spring the garden earns the guide's top score. Parking is free in the lot across from the gardens, per the garden's FAQ. The JC Raulston Arboretum scores just as high that season, but it asks for a garden rental when a session runs over 30 minutes, has more than six people or is commercial.

Summer and fall: roses and color
The Raleigh Municipal Rose Garden has about 1,200 roses of 60 varieties. The listing says they bloom from late May to autumn. Heat is a factor in July and August, so ask for a start near sunset. Parking is very limited beside the garden, and most spaces are along Pogue Street.
Fall is the strongest season at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, Yates Mill County Park, Umstead State Park and Lake Johnson Park, all rated 5 of 5. Oakwood asks for a special permit for commercial photography and says funerals should not be photographed. Call 919-832-6077 before you plan a session there.
General tip, not a rule: color and timing shift by a week or two each year. Check conditions the week before. The seasonal calendar lists bloom and color month by month.
Winter: low light and quiet spots
Winter gives low, warm light for most of the day and fewer visitors. Pullen Park, Yates Mill and Lake Johnson Park rate 3 of 5 in winter in the guide. Pullen Park and Lake Johnson Park are the busier two, so a weekday morning is calmer. Pullen Park is the first public park in North Carolina, per the city, and it has a carousel, a train and playgrounds.
Wear layers and plan for cold hands. A shorter session is easier on small children, and a Mini runs up to 20 minutes.
